Cycling Helmets

Should you or shouldn’t you? Is it worth it or pointless? I’m talking about cycling helmets of course. The debate goes on and on with some people swearing by them and others saying they are a waste of time.

This can cause confusion for the new cyclist so let’s clear up the argument. My personal opinion is cycling helmets are crucial and I wouldn’t get on my bike without one.

I admit I cycled over twenty years without one. In those days they didn’t exist. Today however they are common cycling accessories and it would really be stupid not to wear a piece of safety equipment if it is available.

I’ve read some of the arguments going on in the cycling forums with some people saying helmets are pointless unless something falls on your head. I couldn’t disagree more, a cycling helmet won’t save you if you get run over by a lorry but it may save you if you come off your bike and smash your head on the floor.

There’s really no argument in my opinion, cycling helmets are good. With the amount of cycling helmets on the market today you have plenty to choose from. I admit when they first started to make an appearance in this country, I did think they looked a little weird but now they’re as natural as a cycling pump.

Today’s cycling helmets are so well designed and light that you can forget you’ve even got one on. And a good helmet will be so well ventilated that it will help to keep you cool when you start to sweat.

If you’ve spent a bit of money on a decent bike don’t skimp on a good helmet. Choose your cycling helmet carefully and make it a natural addition to your bike. I know there’s loads of arguments why cycling helmets are pointless but my argument is simply this. Why not increase you safety on your bike, anything that reduces your risk of injury while cycling is good.
